1,2 1,2 Exhibition

Hardly anybody has photographed as many Hip Hop artists as Ilja Meefout. The exhibition ‘1,2 1,2’ is an incre-dible overview of his career path of 12 years, in which he has captured photos of notable national and in-ternational Hip Hop artists, either at the heights of their succes or at the tipping point of a promising career. From Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg to Lil Wayne and Pusha T. With his eye behind the lens, Meefout tries to capture how he interprets one’s music; often under non-ideal circumstances and also not necessarily on stage. His unique way of working has earned him the title of ‘the leading Dutch Hip Hop photographer’.

Meefout’s love for Hip Hop is evident in his work. The portraits give insight in a subculture that attracts thousands of young-hearted people worldwide. Ilja Meefout grew up in the Bijlmer – a multicultural neighbourhood in Amsterdam – living and breathing cassette tapes of Eric B & Rakim, NWA and Public Enemy. Once he had found his calling as a photographer, combining the two was a logical thing to do. For the last 12 years, photography has had his full attention. An exclusive selection of his work, which has evolved into a chronicle of Hip Hop, is being exhibited at the Melkweg in Amsterdam.

Interview – Hiphop In Je Smoel

During my exhibition ‘Backstage’ colleague photographer Joël Frijhoff interviewed me about how I got started and some of my favorite shots. We had a great talk (in Dutch) and Joël captured some brilliant pictures as well.

“Ilja Meefout wordt met recht de huisfotograaf van de Nederlandse hiphop genoemd. Er zijn maar weinig Nederlandse artiesten die niet voor zijn lens hebben gestaan en er zijn nog minder Nederlandse hiphopfotografen die zijn werk niet kennen. HIJS sprak Ilja over hoe hij is begonnen met fotografie en twee van zijn favoriete beelden.”

Interview – Very Rare AMS

The good people of VERY RARE AMS interviewed me about my work. All pictures in the article were shot last year (except the Snoop Dogg one, wich, ofcourse, is timeless).

Wu-Tang Clan - Once Upon A Time In Shaolin

Wu-Tang Clan – Once Upon A Time In Shaolin

A few years ago Cilvaringz contacted me if I was interested in becoming the photographer for a new project he was working on. I worked with Cilvaringz before on projects with artists he managed, the cover of his solo-album, the official 2010 European tour picture of Method Man and more. This new project was a Wu-Tang album he had just started working on. Over the course of several years we did shoots for the artwork, productshots and press pictures in Morocco, Europe and New York City.

Wikipedia: “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin is a limited edition double album by the New York hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan made available for a single purchase in 2015. The concept to offer a musical work in a single form was conceived by long time Wu-Tang affiliate Cilvaringz and was based on music exploitation as a commissioned commodity in the Baroque, Enlightenment and Renaissance ages. The idea was further developed with Wu-Tang leader RZA into a concept presentable to the public.

The Guinness Book of Records certified the album as the most valuable album in existence, outpricing the previous most expensive records in the world held by Elvis Presley and The Beatles.”

Straight Outta Control

When I heard the creme de la creme of the Dutch hiphop scene were teaming up to record a N.W.A. tribute I was immediately excited. It’s not everyday that the best MC’s in the game team up for three days to record an EP. I have been working with all of the artists involved in this project from the beginning of their careers (pressphotos, mixtape-, EP-, single- and albumcovers) and really wanted to document the next step in their journey.

The project is called Straight Outta Control and is losely insprired by the N.W.A. blockbuster biopic Straight Outta Compton. Besides shooting behind the scenes photos I also shot the EP- and singlecover.

My LumenPhoto collection features celebrity portraits and concert photos from when I started in 2005 up to my most recent work. We are still in the process of making the collection up to date and adding my latest work in the future as well. So make sure to check out LumenPhoto.nl on a regular basis. If there is a photo you’d like to use currently missing, please let the good people at LumenPhoto or me know. Enjoy!

There are very few Hip Hop legends that have not been captured by the lens of Ilja Meefout. A selection of his most iconic images made over the past 10 years will come together in one unique, raw and real exhibition: Backstage.

Backstage is the first solo exhibition of Ilja Meefout. It’s not only a photo exhibition on the most influential international Hip Hop artists of our time, Backstage also focuses on the man behind the camera. His perspective, his view, his take is the theme that brings this collection on view together. Meefout’s exhibition allows you to witness the photographs and converse with the man behind these images of icons caught in a moment in time. What makes this exhibition so urgent is that it captures a shared feeling of this generation. Whether you like to listen to it or not, Hip Hop is one of the most – if not THE most – influential subcultures of our time. Walking past these works is like skipping through a chapter of a history book.

Backstage is created specially for the OPEN ART ROUTE and will be on view daily from June 20th until July 5th (16h-19h).
